This poll was conducted in early August 2025, shortly after a gunman
rampaged through a New York City office tower, killing four and then himself. The man had a history of mental health problems. “Red flag laws” are designed for such people, but the laws rely on others to petition a court to temporarily remove the at-risk person’s firearms. The man’s home state of Nevada had such a law, but no one petitioned a court for the man in question.
As of March 2025, 21 U.S. states and Washington, DC, had red flag laws, and the federal government did not have a red flag law.
