Policy Context
At the time this poll was conducted in July 2023, there was a complex set of dollar limits that various entities could give directly to various types of campaigns for federal office. Different states had their own campaign finance laws for state elections. However, it’s likely that respondents to this item were thinking about scenarios in which individuals or companies can give unlimited amounts to outside groups such as super PACs (political action committees) that spend in support of a campaign. As long as there is no coordination between the super PAC and the candidate or party it is supporting, the super PAC can spend without limit. Respondents might also have been thinking about the special case of candidates running for office who can spend unlimited amounts of their personal money on their campaign.
